Job Description

The Mental Health Occupational Therapist, will serve as a clinical resource within the interprofessional team providing care, assisting with comprehensive assessment, and providing treatment to children/youth ages 6 to 12 and their families. This role also focuses on supporting such things as emotional regulation, social skills, peer relationships and sensory processing needs to help children/youth increase their level of functioning. This Mental Health Occupational Therapist will use evidence based interventions while working collaboratively with the transdisciplinary team to address the presenting needs of the clients and their families with a trauma-informed lens.

Qualifications

Conduct comprehensive occupational therapy assessments addressing sensory processing, emotional regulation, functional skills, play, self-care, school participation, and community functioning.

Develop, implement, and regularly update individualized, goal-oriented treatment plans that align with child, family, and interprofessional priorities.

Provide evidence-informed occupational therapy interventions within natural environments, including home, school, and community settings.

 Support children in developing self-regulation, coping, social participation, daily living skills, and routines that promote stability and independence.

Collaborate closely with children, caregivers, schools, and community partners to ensure consistent, coordinated care across settings.

Actively participate in interprofessional team meetings and shared care planning

Coach and educate caregivers and team members on strategies related to sensory integration, behavior regulation, routines, and environmental adaptations.

Support children during periods of crisis by providing functional, developmentally appropriate interventions aimed at maintaining safety and participation.

Advocate for children’s occupational and developmental needs within schools, community agencies, and service systems.

Provide consultation to staff and community partners to support successful participation in academic and social environments.

Monitor, document, and evaluate treatment progress using measurable outcomes, adapting interventions as needed.

Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation in accordance with organizational, regulatory, and professional standards.

Participate in case coordination, program development, and quality improvement initiatives related to service delivery

Education and/or Certification

Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited program - Required

Current Certification of Registration issues through the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario - Required

Three (3) years experience working with children and adolescents - Required

Knowledge of sensory integration, emotional regulation frameworks, and social skill development strategies an asset.
